The Skelligs 22/06/2010
Here are a few photos from a recent trip to Skellig Michael for reader's delectation. If you're not sure what/where Skellig Michael is have a look here, and some might be interested in the draft management plan here or the tourist information leaflet, which has good a good map of the island here. The trip was very pleasant and included an excellent talk by the guide at the top who's name escapes me. There seemed to be some excavation work going on while I was there but I'm not sure what exactly they're digging/conserving. Anyone looking for copies of any of the photos can get some from the Seandalaiocht flickr page or contact me for full resolution images. Comments22/06/2010 20:02

Did they happen to tell you about the people that fell to their deaths on Skellig Michael. My husband fell to his death in May, 2009, and a lady fell to her death from the same spot in Sept,2009. They refuse to put up some type of barrier in that spot, they said it would take away from the site, but they have already fabricated things on top. Go to Utube and look at "The fabrication of Skellig Michael".

Hi Carolyn, I'm very sorry to hear that. Yes there was a guide at the start of the steps who made it very clear that there had been two deaths last year and emphasised the importance of taking extreme car. We were also required to read the safety notices before climbing up.

Brian, did they mention that they never told us that the site was not officially open to visitors, there were no guides on the Island, and the boats captains were not licensed to take visitors out at that time due to a dispute with the OPW. They didn't have any type of emergency first aid or personnel trained in first aid at the site. After my husband fell, they said they were putting emergency personnel on the Island, plus guides and medical equipment. When the other person fell, there was a Doctor from Germany who was a visitor, and he attended to her. The equipment they had was not sufficient. They called for the helicopter, as they did for my husband, but it took over an hour or longer, and they didn't even have a key to open the gate to the helipad. I am shocked that the OPW in their safety report are blaming the victims, saying it is a mountaineering experience, when they know nothing about the 2 people that fell. I can assure you my husband was able to climb the 600 steps, as we did much hiking. We vacationed all the time in National Parks where we hiked rough terrain. In speaking with the other persons family, they, too, did much of the same. I don't see anything wrong with using the rocks from the Island to put up a little barrier at that area. It seems to me that if 2 people fell from the same spot, there has to be something very wrong and unsafe there. My family is going through pure hell because of the loss of a husband, father, grandfather, and friend. I also know the other persons family is going through the same thing. We are not asking for a hugh fence, or anything unsightly, just some sort of barrier.

Carolyn, I'm not sure what to say except I am very sorry for your loss and the pain and suffering you and your family are going through. Its a horrible thing to have happened and I hope everything possible is done to prevent anything like it happening again. Best wishes,Brian.

Thank you Brian, we are trying to prevent anything like this from happening again, but it seems to fall on deaf ears, but both families will not give up.
